Did You Know? The McGrath Cup is in memory of a Cork Man.

The McGrath Cup commemorates the legacy of Joe McGrath, a Cork native renowned for coaching both football and hurling county teams. In the 1970s, McGrath played a pivotal role in guiding Blackrock to All-Ireland success. Notably, he, alongside Eamon Ryan, jointly coached Cork to a narrow victory over Kerry in the 1983 Munster final, marked by Tadhg Murphy’s memorable late goal.

Five years later, McGrath, originally from Down, achieved further success by coaching Cork to the All-Ireland U21 hurling title. In a decisive final, Cork triumphed over Kilkenny with a commanding scoreline of 4-11 to 1-5. McGrath’s contributions extended beyond the field, as he actively participated in establishing coaching structures at the national level. As one of the pioneering full-time coaching officers in Cork under the Carrigdhoun banner, his influence left a lasting impact on the development of the sport.
