Cork Colleges win in Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup

UCC’s comfortable 20 point-victory over Maynooth this evening secured an Electric Ireland quarter-final clash with defending champions UL.

It didn’t look like it would be such an easy win in the first-half though, when Maynooth gave as good as they got.

Despite conceding a soft goal to Brian Hayes after 15 minutes, they were still very much in the tie at half-time when they trailed by just a single point, 1-7 to 0-9.

But UCC were a much different beast in the second-half and never looked like losing after Shane Barrett fired home their second goal after 41 minutes.

The same man hit their third major five minutes from the time and substitute Fionn Coleman struck their fourth as they blood and bandages cruised to victory.

In tonight’s other match, Sean Walsh’s late equaliser for MTU Cork against DCU Dóchas Éireann secured their place in the last eight where they will play University of Galway.

With three minutes of normal time left that outcome didn’t seem likely with the home team trailing by three points.

But two converted frees by Brian Lynch followed by Walsh’s late heroics worked the oracle for the Cork college.
