Club Sustainability Officer
Each Cork GAA club is encouraged to appoint a Sustainability Officer to promote local environmental and community initiatives as part of Cork GAA’s Rebels Going Green programme. This role focuses on practical, achievable actions that make clubs more sustainable while strengthening their role in the local community.
Role Purpose
The Club Sustainability Officer will lead and coordinate sustainability activity within their club. Working with the club executive, the officer will:
- Promote environmentally responsible practices
- Champion projects that reduce waste, improve energy efficiency, and enhance community wellbeing
Key Responsibilities
- Promote and champion Cork GAA’s sustainability goals within the club and wider community
- Identify simple, achievable actions that align with Cork GAA’s sustainability priorities, including energy, water, waste, biodiversity, and travel, in line with the Green Clubs framework
- Coordinate and support the delivery of local sustainability projects and events
- Coordinate actions such as grant applications, linking with local partners, and ensuring sustainability is considered within club planning and operations
- Encourage participation by players, members, and local groups in sustainability initiatives
- Report progress and share examples of good practice with the County Sustainability Officer
- Support the club in meeting any sustainability commitments agreed with Cork GAA or partner programmes
Initial Focus Areas
- Become familiar with the GAA Green Clubs framework and explore how the club might adopt its principles in the future
- Support energy and waste reduction measures at club facilities
- Encourage biodiversity and planting projects on club grounds
- Organise or assist with community clean-up or awareness events
- Promote sustainable travel options where possible for games and training
Support from Cork GAA
The Club Sustainability Officer will be supported by the County Sustainability Officer and the Cork GAA Sustainability Committee. Guidance, communication updates, and county-wide initiatives will be provided to help each club develop its own sustainability programme in line with Rebels Going Green.

Through practical action at club level, Rebels Going Green aims to build stronger, more resilient communities and promote long-term environmental responsibility across Cork GAA. The Club Sustainability Officer plays a key role in making this happen — ensuring that sustainability becomes part of everyday life in every Cork club.
