Cork Crowned Munster Minor Football Champions After Extra-Time Epic

Cork claimed the 2026 Electric Ireland Munster Minor Football Championship title after a dramatic 1-13 to 0-14 extra-time victory over Kerry at Páirc Uí Rinn.

In front of 2,066 spectators, the Rebels produced a composed and determined display to secure their 32nd provincial minor football crown and their first since 2022.

A pair of crucial extra-time frees from goalkeeper Rory Twohig proved decisive as Cork held off a strong Kerry finish to emerge victorious after an enthralling contest.

Kerry made the stronger start, racing into a 0-4 to 0-0 lead inside 10 minutes through Fionn O’Dowd (0-3), Lúc Mac Gearailt (0-1), and Daragh Keane (0-6, including frees). Cork gradually settled through midfield influence from Kieran O’Shea (0-1, Man of the Match), while Rory Twohig (0-4) kept the scoreboard ticking to leave the sides level at half-time, 0-5 apiece.

Cork struck the game’s only goal in the 41st minute when Jacob Barry (1-0) finished clinically after Eoghan Ahern’s diagonal delivery, putting the Rebels 1-6 to 0-7 ahead.

Kerry responded strongly through O’Dowd (0-3), Cian Stack (0-1), and Cillian Moynihan (0-1), while Cork were forced to defend superbly, with Eoin Mangan producing a vital goal-saving interception and Morgan Corkery tipping another effort onto the post.

The sides finished level at 1-9 to 0-12 at full-time, before Cork held their nerve in extra-time with key frees from Rory Twohig (0-4 overall) and scores from Ben Hegarty (0-3), Riley O’Donovan (0-1), and Donal Herlihy (0-1) sealing victory.

From Premier Finals to Urban Championships, the very best of primary school hurling and camogie talent will take centre stage in one of Ireland’s premier sporting venues. Players, coaches, families, and supporters can look forward to a fantastic celebration of skill, teamwork, and community spirit.

With dozens of schools competing across multiple grades, there promises to be excitement, drama, and memorable moments throughout the week. This “Leading Gaelic Games in the Primary School” Teacher Summer Course is a blended course using the Association’s new Learning and Development Community Portal (TOBAR).

The face-to-face element runs over two days face-to-face and approximately twelve hours on online modules to be completed first ahead of the two face to face days Monday July 6th and Tuesday July 7th, 2026.

 

GAA – Leading Gaelic Games in Primary Schools – Blended Course

This “Leading Gaelic Games in the Primary School” Teacher Summer Course is a blended course using the Association’s new Learning and Development Community Portal (TOBAR).

The face-to-face element runs over two days face-to-face and approximately twelve hours on online modules to be completed first ahead of the two face to face days Monday July 6th and Tuesday July 7th, 2026.

This course was born from the long-established partnership between Mary Immaculate College and the Munster Council of the GAA in the provision of professional development to teachers. In 2026, this course will be offered across the entire country.

It will develop teachers’ knowledge and skill in the teaching of Gaelic Games in the primary school, focusing in particular on coaching, coaching skills, managing and planning coaching programmes, including those that involve the participation of visiting coaches.

Modules will include physical literacy and movement skill development, the teacher as coach, the social context of Gaelic Games in schools and whole-school planning, and effective use of teaching and other resources.  Participants will be enabled to:

  • Understand the Role of Gaelic games Coaching in the Primary School
  • Develop Physical Education within the School Plan
  • Develop a detailed program of Gaelic games coaching at all levels in the school
  • Develop movement skills of children and apply the skills to games
  • Design an inclusive Gaelic games policy for their school
  • Use the resources of the Gaelic Games organisations to assist in the physical and mental development of their pupils

The course will also address particular issues such as inclusion, curriculum integration and linkage within PE, and games as part of a healthy school environment. Being largely practical-based, it aims to introduce teachers to Gaelic games – hurling, Gaelic football, camogie, ladies Gaelic football, handball and rounders.

This year’s BLENDED summer course runs from WEDNESDAY JULY 1ST TO TUESDAY JULY 7th inclusive, due to department rules.

All of our Summer courses are booked on the condition that the course fee is non-refundable.

Course fees cannot be transferred to another teacher.

Unfortunately, if you wish to cancel your place or you are unable to attend the course, we are not in a position to refund fees.

In the event that the minimum number of participants required do not apply then the Centre will be obliged to cancel the course and all monies will be refunded in full.
