Cork pull clear of Clare in closing stages of U20 clash

Report by Denis Hurley of the Echo Newspaper

Cork 1-19

Clare 1-17

Cork scored the last four points to come out on top in their oneills.com Munster U20HC opener against Clare at O’Garney Park in Sixmilebridge on Tuesday night.

Having conceded the game’s first five points, the Rebels trailed by 0-9 to 0-5 at half-time but, while they hit the front for the first time after Diarmuid Healy’s 44th-minute goal, Clare replied through Shane Meehan and they led by 1-17 to 1-13 after Keith Smyth’s free in the 59th minute.

However, when the need was greatest, Cork – with five of last year’s All-Ireland-winning team starting along with Healy and Kevin Lyons from the successful minor team – responded. Ethan Lyons cut the gap with a huge point before Daniel Hogan was fouled for a free that Eoin O’Leary converted.

Hogan’s pass then set up sub Colin Walsh to put Cork ahead again in the 62nd minute and O’Leary made sure of things with another free after Jack Leahy’s progress was illegally halted.

It means that Clare are out and Cork are guaranteed a semi-final spot, with first place in the group up for grabs when Limerick come to Páirc Uí Rinn next Wednesday. The win seemed unlikely for long periods, though, even allowing for Clare’s first-half profligacy from play and dead balls.

Ben Cunningham was Cork’s only first-half scorer, four frees and a 65, while Conner Hegarty and Diarmuid Cahill impressed for the home side. The four-point interval deficit could have been worse but Cork set about eroding it on the resumption, with Brian Keating’s point making it 0-10 to 0-8 on 34 – a goal might have accrued after Jack Cahalane’s lovely pass – and then then the influential Brian O’Sullivan landed a sideline cut.

Clare responded and only a good Brian Saunderson save denied Meehan a goal on 38. Keith Smyth made it 0-12 to 0-10 but Cunningham replied and then Hogan’s run was the catalyst for Healy’s goal, a lovely doubled effort.

Cahalane put Cork two in front but a superb individual point from Clare’s Oisín O’Donnell was followed by Meehan’s goal after he had won the break from a puckout in midfield and charged at the Cork defence.

As time ticked down, Clare kept Cork at bay but a pair of brilliant O’Sullivan frees meant the deficit remained manageable and Cork’s strong finish saw them take the points.

Ross O’Sullivan inspires Cork to 13 point win over Limerick

Report by Therese O’Callaghan for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Cork 4-21 Limerick 2-14

A Ross O’Sullivan masterclass helped Cork into the semi-final of the Electric Ireland Munster MHC at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh tonight. The inspirational Na Piarsaigh corner-forward and joint-captain, who was substituted in the 50th minute to loud applause, tallied a hefty 3-9.

O’Sullivan was among a host of players to shine for Paudie Murray’s side.

It makes it two wins from two games for Cork in Group 2, this also secures a home venue for that penultimate round. In their two matches to date, Cork have tallied 7-46.

Limerick have a game in hand, they play Kerry next week. Both of these counties will advance to the quarter-finals with the second placed in Group 2 taking on third place in Group 1 and vice-versa (Clare or Waterford).

Cork had this one wrapped up early on, they laid down a marker from the throw-in.

They got off to a flying start as they registered four points in the opening six minutes, a brace each from Ross O’Sullivan and James Murray.

Pierce Connery began the Limerick scoring in the seventh minute but there was no stopping a rampant Rebel attack, Sean O’Donoghue firing a 10th minute goal to leave them seven points up.

With plenty of supply coming from a determined backline, Jayden Casey’s white flag left them 1-7 to 0-2 in front before the visitors found their feet.

Limerick hit a purple patch, a goal from Darren Collopy arrived either side of points by Collopy and Bradley Moran (both frees). It helped reduce the arrears, but Cork quickly regrouped to strike the next three points, 1-10 to 1-4.

The home side extended the advantage when Ross O’Sullivan landed Cork’s second goal after being put through by James Murray.

At the half-way stage, Cork were 2-12 to 1-7 to the good – all six forwards were on the scoresheet – their lead, however, would have been greater but for Limerick goalkeeper Fionn O’Brien who pulled off three outstanding saves.

Try as they might, Kevin O’Hagan’s Limerick could find no answer to Cork’s overall firepower. The winners’ class shone through again when they rattled off 1-3 in the five minutes after the restart. O’Sullivan raised the green flag and when he cracked home his third goal close to the three-quarter mark, they went 4-17 to 2-9 up.

Mark Field got the Limerick goal, and Collopy rifled over a couple of frees but they couldn’t make any serious inroads into Cork’s big advantage.
