A combined total of 1-14 from Jack Leahy and William Buckley maintained Cork’s U20 winning streak against a Clare side derailed by a 25th-minute red card for midfielder Ronan Keane.

Backed by the wind, the Banner led 0-11 to 0-5 at that juncture, but Ben O’Connor’s Rebels took over with the extra man.

Leahy had been taken off the frees at half-time after three misses but re-emerged with a sensational second-half blitz of 1-4 in the subsequent 10 minutes. He finished with 1-6 while Buckley tallied 0-8, four from play.

At the U17 grade, this Cork team inflicted a 40-point hammering on Clare, 6-28 to 0-6, but the Banner’s fortunes have dramatically risen since then.

They got off to a flier at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh to build up a 0-10 to 0-3 lead by the 15th minute led by Conor Whelan, who finished with 10 points.

The momentum changed with Keane’s red.

A Ross O’Sullivan goal, after Diarmuid Healy’s initial strike was brilliantly saved by Mark Sheedy, plus two huge points from Mikey Finn cut the gap to two, 0-13 to 1-8, by half-time.

Leahy was on fire from there. He created his goal with a terrific turn to sit down his marker and rattle the top corner. They outscored the visitors 1-7 to 0-1 between the 32nd and 40th minutes to move six clear.

The gap was still six with five minutes to play when Clare briefly brought the game back to life. Substitute James Organ grabbed the sliotar out of the night sky and rifled to the roof of the net.

Cork’s response was a string of points to put the game out of sight, three from Buckley and another for Eoin O’Leary, who was denied a late goal by Sheedy’s sharp reflexes.

At SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh, John Meyler’s Cork held off some late Limerick resistance to emerge 1-16 to 1-10 victors.

The Rebels, who lost their opener to Tipp, clinched the victory with a 59th-minute goal from Adam Lee, who produced an instinctive pull on Peter Barrett’s pass.

With Mark O’Brien accurate from placed balls, Cork had the better of the first half to lead 0-11 to 0-6.

Limerick did notch the final pair to close the gap to five but the hosts were still 0-15 to 0-8 ahead by the 47th minute.

A Patrick Kearney free and Diarmuid Hurley point were followed by a Jack Cosgrave penalty, after Danny Sheehan was fouled, to leave just two in the difference.

But O’Brien’s seventh point and Lee’s goal saw them home.

Tickets for the upcoming Munster Senior Hurling Championship will be distributed to clubs in the coming days.

Kilworth; borrowing of €340,000 in total for construction of a new dressing room complex.

Games Development

Monthly Club meetings with the GDC’s continue. All meetings begin at 7.30pm. Every club in each region is asked to have two representatives in attendance.

Rebels’ Bounty

The Cathaoirleach thanked all clubs for their efforts in promotion and selling Rebels’ Bounty tickets. It was a great success, with a further increase on entries from 2023, to almost 30,000 members.

Facilities Report

 EIA Report – Munster v Crusaders

The Rúnaí gave details of the recently published Economic Impact Assessment report commissioned by Munster Rugby following the Munster v Crusaders game which took place on February 3rd at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

The Rúnaí noted that the report highlighted the economic value of sell-out games in the stadium for the entire City.

Key findings;

  • 40,885 – attendance.
  • €3.7 million – Total EI generated by non-local attendees.
  • €2.7 million – Total direct expenditure generated by non-local attendees.
  • €2.9 million – Total direct expenditure by Cork City & County attendees.
  • €5.6 million – Total direct expenditure generated by all attendees.
  • €76 – Average spend per head by day trippers to the game.
  • €223 – Average overnight spectator spend per night.

 Páirc Uí Rinn will be closed for the remainder of April to allow for annual maintenance work to take place.

SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh faces into its busiest period of the year, with many games taking place over the coming weeks.

Depending on permutations under the recently agreed rota, the stadium may host the Munster Senior Hurling Final on June 9th.

 Central Council Report

In the absence of delegate Marc Sheehan, the Rúnaí gave details of the most recent Central Council meeting.

A derogation from Rule is no longer required for our Club Championships following the passing of a motion allowing Counties with Divisional teams to play off, before entering the Championship proper at a later stage.

Permission was also granted for SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh to host Munster Rugby’s home semi-final in the European Champions Cup on the weekend of May 5th, should fixture permutations follow.

 Munster Delegate Joe Blake gave his report on the most recent Munster Council meeting.

Various items were outlined, including ticket prices, club grants, championship regulations and programmes.

 

Any Other Business

The Rúnaí indicated that the Bye-law Review subcommittee hope present their recommendations to the County Management Committee at its next meeting, with issues such as terms of offices and the makeup of various committees to be considered.

If delegates are favourable to change at next County Committee meeting and motions will be put to the Special Convention ahead of the June County Committee meeting for decision.

The meeting closed with Votes of Sympathy.

Cork and Kerry motored smoothly through the gears to open their Munster round-robin campaigns with victories.

At Fethard, the Rebels earned a double-scores victory over Tipperary. Captain Hugh O’Connor (0-5) and midfielder Rory O’Shaughnessy (0-3) kicked a perfect eight points from eight attempts, while O’Connor came close to adding a pair of goals in the first half.

They didn’t need any. Going in 0-8 to 0-3 ahead having played with the breeze, Tipp could never get nearer than four points. Cork coasted to the finish and will move on to next Wednesday’s encounter with Kerry sharper for this run-out.

A notable feature was their emphasis on attacking marks. They claimed three inside the opening 20 minutes and converted each via Dara Sheedy (0-2) and O’Connor.

O’Connor almost found the net in the fourth minute but his palmed effort was saved by Robbie McGrath. He would later rattle the post after battling through some Tipp tacklers.

Midfielders Eoin Doocey and O’Shaughnessy traded classy left-footed points but Cork had the greater range of scorers. As well as Sheedy’s marks, Olan Corcoran and Bryan Hayes swung over skyscraping efforts to lead by five at midway.

O’Connor resumed with an amazing acute point on the wrong side for a right-footer but Tipp edged back into contention with a long-range beauty by Orrin Jones (0-5) and another from Shane Ryan.

The gap was back to four, 0-10 to 0-6, but Cork reasserted their control with two O’Connor frees bookending an O’Shaughnessy score. Substitute Aaron O’Sullivan capped their victory with a stoppage-time point.
