IT’S now two defeats from the opening two games in the Allianz Division 2 football league for Cork after a deserved defeat to Louth at DEFY Páirc Mhuire in Ardee on Sunday afternoon.
Report from Barry O’Mahony, Echolive.ie
The stakes were very high for John Cleary’s side after an 11-point defeat away to Donegal on the opening weekend, but in the end, they didn’t have the answers to break down a tough Louth outfit.
This was never going to be an easy outing, Louth were desperately unlucky to lose by a point away to Armagh first day out, and also Cork lost at this particular venue last year. Two goals from the Wee County in the space of two minutes in the first half proved crucial in this one.
The Rebels, wearing their away kit, were aided by the strong wind in the opening 35 minutes, and kicked the first point after a minute from a Brian Hurley free. Louth were level two minutes later when their marksman Sam Mulroy landed a difficult free against the wind.
Cork created an excellent goal-scoring opportunity six minutes in, but Hurley was unable to convert and then seconds later the Castlehaven player received a black card, Cork down to 14 players for 10 minutes. The sides traded white flags in what was a lively opening.

Picture: Ben McShane/Sportsfile Louth thought they had a goal after ten minutes but Paul Matthews was in the square when the ball dropped to him and he finished with aplomb, but it was a great call from the umpires. Hurley came back in with the away side ahead 0-5 to 0-3 after 16 minutes, with goalkeeper Patrick Doyle’s 45 the pick of the scores.
Cork were in the ascendancy as they led 0-7 to 0-4 with 13 minutes to the break before the Wee County scored two goals in the space of two minutes from Ciarán Downey and Ciarán Keenan. Very soft goals to give away from a Cork point of view.
John Cleary’s side did respond well as they kicked the last two points of the half to trail 2-4 to 0-9 at the interval.
Louth now had the aid of a strong wind in the second half, but it was Cork who had most of the possession early on which yielded a fine point from Colm O’Callaghan to draw parity. It was a tight and cagey opening to the new half. The second score arrived after 46 minutes when Craig Lennon nudged his team in front.

Picture: Ben McShane/Sportsfile A Hurley free tied up matters once more before a beauty from Eoghan McSweeney nudged the Rebels ahead with 19 minutes remaining, 0-12 to 2-5. Downey had a chance to get his second goal, but Cork netminder Doyle made a fine stop to deny the forward. The sides exchanged points as the Leesiders held a slender one-point advantage after 55 minutes.
Another Lennon effort levelled up the encounter, until Ryan Burns bisected the posts to give the home team the lead before a Mulroy free gave Louth a two-point buffer after 69 minutes. Cork threw the kitchen sink at Louth in injury-time, but to no avail. Two defeats from the first two league games.
The Rebels now have a two-week gap to the third league fixture, the first one at home this season, when Cavan come to SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday, February 17 with throw-in at 4pm.

Clare maintained their Cusack Park hold over Pat Ryan’s Cork when impressively defying the conditions with a powerful second half display in front of 7,380 in Ennis.
Having shared the spoils in last year’s equivalent before Clare dramatically edged matters by the minimum at the same venue last May in the Munster Championship, not even a recent Munster Hurling League reverse in Páirc Uí Rinn could provide any solace when it mattered most as Seadna Morey’s late goal finally sealed a positive start to the new Allianz Hurling League campaign for the Banner.
Despite controlling matters in the opening quarter, with the aid of a strong wind, to power 0-9 to 0-3 clear, the home side would be floored by a brace of goals in the space of nine minutes as Patrick Horgan and Tommy O’Connell regained full parity nearing the half hour mark at 0-11 to 2-5.
Clare, aided by late points for Robin Mounsey (2) and the ever-impressive Mark Rodgers, did salvage a one point advantage by the break at 0-14 to 2-7 but with a gale to come, the pendulum appeared to switch to the Rebels for the new half.
A spirited Clare refused to adhere to that script, however, as Rodgers converted four successive points to initiate a defiant third quarter blitz that saw David Reidy and David Fitzgerald contribute to seven of the first eight points at 0-21 to 2-8.
A shellshocked Cork did bounce back off the ropes with five different scorers including the inspirational Ciaran Joyce slashing the deficit to just two by the 64th minute at 0-22 to 2-14.
However, having done the hard work, Clare were not about to let this glorious opportunity slip as David Fitzgerald’s pinpoint delivery from the left wing was excellently fielded and batted to the net by substitute Morey to restore a five point cushion.
That goal would remain the difference in the end as Cork were kept at arm’s length by an obstinate Banner side that deservedly prevailed ahead of an early top-of-the-table clash against Davy Fitzgerald’s Waterford on away soil next Sunday.
Meanwhile Pat Ryan and Co. will have to wait until their Munster Championship rematch on Sunday, April 28th to redress the balance and finally end his big game Banner hoodoo.

Munster edged out Superb Rugby champions Crusaders on another memorable night in SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh in front of a sold-out crowd of 40,885.
It was an entertaining encounter between the URC champions and the New Zealanders which produced an exciting finish.
Former Munster coach Rob Penney saw his Crusaders side almost snatch a draw when they crossed for a try with the clock two minutes in the red but they were unable to add the conversion.
The scene was set when Crusaders performed the first Haka at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh ahead of kick-off.
Munster led 14-7 at the end of an opening half where they were on top for long periods.
They hit the front after a good bout of possession when Gavin Coombes got in for his first try after 15 minutes after Shane Daly was stopped short.
Joey Carbery added the extras from the left wing to make it 7-0.
Daly was denied a try four minutes later when three Crusaders managed to get back to prevent him grounding the ball after another good build-up.
But the pressure paid off six minutes from the break when Munster went to the corner with a penalty. Hooker Eoghan Clarke was stopped short but from the recycle Coombes got over for his second try.
Carbery again converted for 14-0.
But Crusaders hit back before the interval with scrum-half Mitch Drummond scoring after being set up by Macca Springer and Dallas McLeod. Taha Kemera converted to leave it 14-7 at the break.
Crusaders got back on level terms after 66 minutes when McLeod got in for a try which Rivez Reihana converted to make it 14-14.
But Munster hit the front ten minutes from time when they were again rewarded for going to the corner and a few phases later Scott Buckley squeezed over and Carbery converted to lead 21-14.
Crusaders finished strongly but while Jamie Hannah got in for their third try, the conversion from Rivez Reihana drifted across goal and Munster held on to back up their win last season over South Africa A with another win at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
Round-Up
Eoghan Clarke and Ruadhán Quinn made their first starts for Munster.
Colm Hogan and Kamil Nowak made their Munster debuts.
