Shinty-Hurling International: A Unique Sporting Rivalry Comes to Cork
Ireland and Scotland will renew one of the most distinctive rivalries in traditional stick-and-ball sports when the Shinty-Hurling International takes place at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday, October 24.
The annual international brings together Ireland’s national hurling team and Scotland’s national shinty team in a contest played under a unique set of compromised rules, combining elements of both sports.
Hurling and shinty share deep historical and cultural roots, with the international series providing an opportunity to celebrate that shared heritage while showcasing the contrasting skills, styles and traditions of the two games.
A Blend of Two Traditional Sports
Shinty-hurling is played using a combination of rules from Irish hurling and Scottish shinty. The adapted format creates a distinctive contest, requiring players from both traditions to adapt their skills to a common set of rules.
The scoring system differs from standard hurling, with goals worth three points, while points scored from open play are worth one and certain long-range or free strikes can earn two points.
The result is a fast-paced international encounter that offers something different for supporters familiar with either sport.
A Rivalry with a Long History
The relationship between the two sports stretches back well over a century. One of the earliest recorded meetings between shinty and hurling teams took place in 1896, when London Scottish Camanachd Club faced London GAA in a friendly fixture.
An official contest using a combination of the two sports’ rules followed in Scotland in 1897. International meetings between Ireland and Scotland took place intermittently before a more regular series was established in the modern era.
The Gaelic Athletic Association and the Camanachd Association committed to an annual series in 2003, helping to strengthen the relationship between the two sporting traditions. Following an interruption during the Covid-19 pandemic, the series returned in 2023.
Ireland and Scotland have enjoyed a competitive rivalry over the years, with the annual internationals continuing to provide a unique test for players from both countries.
