Cork Allianz Hurling & Football Programme

On Tuesday afternoon, Cork’s hurling and football league programme was announced for this year’s Allinaz leagues.

The Hurlers will compete in Division 1a of the league, they will meet Waterford, Tipperary, Westmeath, Limerick and Galway. Our footballers are in Division 2A South and will play Kildare, Laois and Clare.

 

2021 Allianz Football League

The Allianz Football League will from the weekend of May 15/16 to the weekend of June 19/20 with Divisions split into North and South as originally planned in December.

Four teams will be in each group based on geography with three Round Robin games per team. The top two in each divisional group will advance to the league semi-finals followed by a league final.

The bottom two in each divisional group will play relegation semi-finals with the two losers of those matches relegated. The bottom teams in Division 4 will play a Shield semi-final and final.

League finals will only be played on June 19/20 if counties involved are not playing in the championship the following weekend. If they are, then joint winners will be declared for Division 1 and joint winners and promotion for Divisions 2, 3, and 4.

London will not be participating in the 2021 Allianz Football League.

2021 Allianz Hurling League

The Hurling League will league will start with a bang on Saturday, May 8, when r Limerick play Tipperary in the LIT Gaelic Grounds at 5.30pm.

The other Division 1 matches over the course of the weekend will see Westmeath play Galway, Dublin play Kilkenny, Cork play Waterford, Wexford play Laois, and Antrim play Clare.

Divisions 1 and 2 of the Allianz Hurling League will run from the weekend of May 8/9 to the weekend of June 12/13. Division 3 of the Allianz Hurling League will run from the weekend of May 15/16 to the weekend of June 19/20.

There will be no Division 1 Hurling League quarter-finals, semi-finals, or Final played. There will either be joint winners for 2021, or or if the teams that win Div 1A and Div 1B meet in the Championship, this will double as a League Final.

The Division 1 Hurling League Relegation Play-off will be played as curtain raiser to Senior Hurling Semi Final in August.

Divisions 2 and 3 will not have League Finals either. The top team in each Division will be crowned champions. The bottom team in Divisions 2A, 2B, and 3A will be relegated.

British based teams will not be involved in the Allianz Hurling Leagues this year. London and London and Warwickshire will start 2022 in Divisions 2B and 3A respectively; Lancashire in 3B.

Munster Senior Football Championship

On Monday morning, the draw for Munster Senior Football Championship took place.

Cork have been draw to play the winners of the opening round between Waterford and Limerick.

On the other side of the draw, Kerry will play Clare in the Q-Final with the winners meeting Tipperary in the Semi-Final.

The draw for Munster Senior Hurling Championship took place on Monday morning.

Cork have been drawn against Limerick in Semi-Final stages of 2021 Championship.

On the other side Clare will meet Waterford in the open game with the winners playing Tipperary in the Semi-Final.

Cork County Championships – Review of Intermediate & Junior Competitions

At last week’s County Executive meeting, the following was decided regarding Intermediate Championships in both Football and Hurling.
  • Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship     PIHC  
  • Intermediate A Hurling Championship                IAHC  
  • Lower Intermediate Hurling Championship        LIHC  
  • Premier Intermediate Football Championship    PIFC   
  • Intermediate A Football Championship               IAFC  
  1. The regrading to Junior of all 12 teams in Lower Intermediate Hurling (LIHC) and 4 teams from Intermediate A Football Championship (IAFC), scheduled for the end of the 2021 season, has been paused for one year, due to the effects of Covid-19 related restrictions.
  1. It is planned to revert to two Intermediate Hurling (PIHC & IAHC) and two Intermediate Football grades (PIFC & IAFC) at the end of 2022, instead. The IAHC and IAFC grades will contain 16 teams each. LIHC will be abolished, as planned.
  1. Consequently, the 2020 Junior A Hurling winners will not be promoted to IAHC. They will instead take their place in LIHC. This means that there is a requirement to relegate one team only from IAHC 2020. Therefore, the round robin relegation series between Meelin, Glen Rovers and Argideen Rangers, which has yet to be completed, will see only the bottom team relegated to LIHC 2020, rather than the two teams outlined previously.
  1. Also, the 2021 Junior A Hurling winners will be promoted to LIHC for 2022 and not IAHC, again requiring only one team to be relegated from IAHC at the end of 2021.
  1. Promotion / relegation of one-up, one-down will continue to apply across all grades indefinitely.
  1. As previously outlined, a full review of all Junior Competitions at County and Divisional level, in both League and Championship will take place in the coming months.
