The online application process for Gaelic Games clubs will open on Friday, August 12th and close on Friday, August 26th.
Sport Ireland this week launched a ‘Sport for All’ Disability Supports Club Fund as part of this year’s National Governing Bodies Dormant Accounts Funding.
The scheme is open to all affiliated clubs in the Gaelic Games family (GAA, Camogie, LGFA, Handball, and Rounders) and is designed to support them in the provision of inclusive programmes and supports for people with a disability. The fund is designed to support new inclusive initiates and/or enhance those already established in Gaelic Games clubs.
The GAA Community & Health department in Croke Park is managing the club application process for the fund. A consolidated submission including all club applications that meet the necessary criteria will be forwarded to Sport Ireland by the September 1st deadline.
Clubs can apply for funding of between €1,000 and €5,000 to support the following areas:
- Disability Supports Education & Training
- Disability Supports Programme Activation and Delivery
- Disability Supports Small Scale Equipment and Infrastructure.
Additional essential criteria for clubs applying for funding include:
- Club safeguarding statement in place
- Club children’s officer in place
- Coaches and volunteers who work with underage individuals/teams and vulnerable adults Garda Vetted
An application process for clubs, including a requirement to detail each club’s respective funding request under the three categories above, will open on Friday, August 12th and close on Friday, August 26th. (Details will be issued to club secretaries across all units when the process goes live.)
It is anticipated that an announcement of funding allocations will be made by December 2022. Applying does not guarantee that funding will be approved.
Speaking about the Dormant Accounts Funding, Minister of State for Sport and the Gaeltacht, Jack Chambers TD, said: “The NGB Club Fund being launched today responds directly to the commitment made in the Sport Action Plan 2021-2023 that I launched last November. Helping the sports sector, especially the club network, to recover from the damage caused by the pandemic is one of my top priorities alongside the promotion of a “sport-for-all” ethos across the sector. There’s €2million being set aside under this new Fund and it presents a great opportunity for sports clubs everywhere to consider how they might make their sport even more accessible for people in their communities, especially those with a disability. Sport can offer so many benefits to people’s health and wellbeing and we need to make that a reality on the ground for more and more people.”

Beara GAA 1997 Anniversary Golf Classic
Beara GAA and the Beara Senior Football County Championship winning team of 1997, have launched a fundraising drive to support the future educational needs of James (8) and Molly (4), children of the team’s goalkeeper Padraig Crowley and Gemma Crowley.
Padraig, who celebrates his 50th birthday later this year, grew up in the Beara Peninsula and played football with his local club Castletownbere. It was here where Padraig developed his skills as a goalkeeper. Padraig would go on to represent his Division, Beara with great distinction winning county medals at underage level. In 1997 Padraig was the goalkeeper on the Beara team that defeated Castlehaven in the Cork County Senior Football Final in a replay in SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh, to bring the Andy Scannell cup back to the Beara Peninsula for the first time since 1967.
In recent years, Padraig has been receiving medical treatment, but unfortunately a recent prognosis has not been positive. Padraig is currently undergoing extensive chemotherapy to curtail the growth of a tumour following his second surgery.
Speaking at the launch, Beara 1997 Manager Donal O’ Sullivan said “Padraig Crowley has been part and parcel of the GAA family all his life, representing Castletownbere and Beara in every grade and in numerous county finals. In 1997 he was our last line of defence, and now when needed, we as members of the GAA diaspora are here to support Padraig, his wife Gemma and their children James and Molly”.
Also speaking at the launch, Beara GAA Chairman Michael Murphy speaking on behalf of the Beara board said “Beara GAA are delighted to support the fundraising initiatives to help support the future educational needs of Padraig and Gemma’s children, James (8) and Molly (4) . Padraig represented Beara with great distinction at all levels, and played a vital role as goalkeeper, on the 1997 Beara team that won the Cork Senior Football Championship for the first time in 30 years. That win brought great joy to Beara people everywhere, and I hope that Beara people at home and abroad will support these fundraisers however they can”.
A raffle will be held on the October bank holiday weekend, with a wide variety of prizes available. Tickets cost €10 and are available online at www.bearagaa.ie and also currently on sale from members of the Beara 1997 team and management.
A Golf Classic will be held in Berehaven Golf Club September 15/16/17. Teams of 3 cost €60 and can be booked by contacting Joss Crowley 086 8644111. Tee Boxes and Green sponsorship cost €50 and can be arranged by contacting Barry Murphy 087 2342703.
