Disappointment for Cork as the got their hurling league campaign off to a losing start at Walsh Park.
Cork got off to the perfect start, with two goals in just over a minute. The first came after the full-forward line combined, with Horgan and Kingston setting up Lehane to score. Waterford started to get the upper hand, with Stephen Bennett on target from a free, followed by two from Kieran Bennett, to make it 2-1 to 0-4 after nine minutes. Darragh Fitzgibbon scored for the Rebels, but Calum Lyons and Montgomery combined to set up Patrick Curran for a goal to bring Waterford right back into contention. Bennett hit two more frees, along with a point from Jack Fagan to see them lead afer 16 minutes, 1-7 to 2-2. Harnedy got his first of the game, with Kieran Bennett replying for Waterford. Horgan and Bennett exchanged scores, before a second from Harnedy, followed by a Horgan free had the sides level again. Bennett hit another free, with Cahalane replying but a strong finish to the half, with two more from Bennett along with one from Curran saw Waterford lead at the break 1-13 to 2-8.
Stephen Bennett hit the first two points of the second-half, with Horgan replying for Cork from a free. Bennett was on target again, along with Kieran Bennett as they kept the scoreboard ticking over and with 48 minutes gone they led by 1-17 to 2-11.
Cork responded with two points from Coleman and another Horgan free. Stephen Bennett, Prendergast and Iarlaith Daly hit three in-a-row for Waterford rto put them back in front, with Fitzgibbon on target for the Rebels. Two from Mikey Kearney, along with one from Curran had Waterford in control, but a late goal from Kingston gave Cork a glimmer of a hope, as he made it 3-16 to 1-24. Cahalane got his third of the game, but two late wides from Cork saw their chances of a draw disappear.

THE PÁIRC UÍ Chaoimh doors were opened again, a new pitch surface rolled out and Cork’s footballers began life in Division 3 on a positive note.
They accounted for Offaly in their opening league run out tonight, getting their game together as the match unfolded and benefitting from a powerful scoring contribution from their bench.
2,356 were in attendance to see Ronan McCarthy’s team begin their attempt to mount a swift response to relegation from the second tier spring. He was glad of being able to utilise his reserves to get them over the line.
Michael Hurley only entered the action for the start of the second half but had picked off five points by the finish. John O’Rourke weighed in with a brace while points from the emerging pair of Tadhg Corkery and Colm O’Callaghan swelled the return from their substitutes further.
And Cork needed that extra ingredient as they were given a reminder early on of the necessity for proper focus. John Maughan’s Offaly team moved with purpose and their confident kicking in front of goal entitled them to be in the ascendancy, 0-7 to 0-3 by the 20th minute.
At the midway mark of the first half, all three of Offaly’s inside forwards had clipped over points from play. Anton Sullivan and Bernard Allen buzzed with intent, but the latter was sent to the sin bin before the break in a setback for his charges.
Cork deployed Ciaran Sheehan in a roving role from his full-forward berth early on. It paid off with a pair of neatly converted points and he set up another. Sean White tried to get things going from centre-forward as well yet too often Cork’s attacks broke down when they were closing in on Paddy Dunican’s goal. The Offaly netminder stood tall to beat away a stinging drive from Ian Maguire in the 16th minute and repeated that act to deny the same player in the second half.
Given their early difficulties Cork would have been reasonably satisfied to be only 0-9 to 0-8 adrift at the break. They kicked the first four points of the second half and that set the tone for their eventual success.
Offaly were left disappointed after how well they had showed up early on. During Allen’s time off the pitch, Cork moved in front and Offaly never came close to overhauling them on the scoreboard once more.
By the three-quarter mark Cork were still not out of sight despite commanding the play but they popped over six points after the 62nd minute to affirm their position of strength. Defenders Sean Powter and Sam Ryan made comebacks from severe hamstring injuries to put in good shifts during this win.
They make the trek to Carrick-on-Shannon next week while Offaly will host Longford.
Scorers for Cork: Michael Hurley 0-5 (0-1f), Cathal O’Mahony (0-2f), Ciaran Sheehan (0-1f) 0-3 each, Sean White, John O’Rourke 0-2 each, Brian Hartnett, Ruairi Deane, Colm O’Callaghan, Kevin Crowley, Tadhg Corkery 0-1 each.
Scorers for Offaly: Bernard Allen 0-5 (0-2f), Anton Sullivan 0-4, Ruairi McNamee 0-3 (0-1f), Cian Johnson 0-1.

1. The time activation for Sin Bin will commence when the game restarts after the dismissal of the player.
2. After the 10 minutes has elapsed, a player can only return to the field of play at a break in play, and with the permission of referee.
If a player returns to the field of play without the permission of the Referee, he shall be dealt with under Rule 6.1 “to challenge the authority of the Referee, linesman or side-line official”. Penalty: Yellow Card. (In effect this would result with the player being sent off because a black card followed by yellow card results in Red card)
3. If a goalkeeper receives a black card, it is at the discretion of the relevant team management as to how to address this matter, e.g. they may choose to use a substitute or use an outfield player (Note: If any outfield player is selected , he must wear a distinctive top if he wishes to avail of the protection provided to goalkeepers as per rule)
4. A player who is in the Sin Bin at the end of extra time, and who has served his 10 minutes but has not returned to play (as there was no break in play) is eligible to be involved in a penalty shootout.
5. If a player commits a further aggressive infraction while in the Sin Bin, the Referee will issue the Player with the relevant card, he will be sent off and cannot return to the game
Mark/Advanced Mark
2.12 Mark (1) (ii)
When a player catches the ball cleanly on or inside a 45m line from a kick in play (i.e. not from set-play) delivered by an attacking player on or beyond the opposing team’s 45m line, that travels at least 20m and without it touching the ground.
The Referee will award the mark by blowing his whistle, the player shall signify to the Referee if he is availing of the free-kick by immediately raising his arm upright and then taking the kick himself from the hands. The free kick shall be taken from the point where the Mark is awarded except in the case of a Mark awarded to an attacking team inside a 13m line when the free shall be taken from the point on the 13m line, directly in line with where the Mark is awarded.
Please also note that for all marks (the advance mark and the kickout mark) the following provisions apply; the player will now be allowed 15 seconds to take the mark (it was 5 seconds previously). The opposing players must retreat 13m (which was 10 previously).
If a player claims the mark, he cannot opt to play on.
It should also be noted that as a Kick-out Mark is considered a “set play” in the Playing Rules, players will not be able to claim an Advanced Mark from the free kick that follows the awarding of a kick-out Mark.
If the Referee determines that the player who makes the Mark has been injured in the process and is unable to take the kick, the Referee shall direct the player’s nearest team mate to take the kick, but this may only be allowed in exceptional circumstances.
Ends.
