Dungourney Power Past Newtownshandrum to Claim Junior B Title
Dungourney 4-13 | Newtownshandrum 1-16
Dungourney secured the Co Op Superstores Junior B Hurling Championship title after a thrilling, goal-laden victory over Newtownshandrum at Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday. Three second-half goals ultimately proved decisive in a tightly contested final.
Newtownshandrum were energetic early on, with points from Sean McCarthy and Cathal Bowles, but Dungourney’s scoring burst began after Cormac Griffin finished a high Cillian Quinn ball to the net for their first goal. Accurate striking from Fionn Daly and James Ahern (who finished with 0-8) ensured Dungourney commanded a five-point lead at halftime (1-9 to 0-7).
Newtownshandrum fought hard in the second half, with Pádraig Noonan proving lethal, but their challenge was repeatedly repelled by crucial Dungourney goals. Colin Murphy billowed the net in the 40th minute, and though Noonan scored a goal to keep Newtownshandrum in touching distance, Dungourney finished with a flourish. A penalty conversion by Fionn Daly and a late goal from Conor Sweeney sealed the famous win.
