Wednesday Webinar

Tonight at 8pm, we welcome, GAA National Development Officer Pat Culhane to speak on the topic of “Why do I Coach?”

Pat has been instrumental in delivering the “5 Star Center” project at Primary School Level and has recently presented at the internationally renowned iCoachKids conference that was held last summer.

Wednesday Webinar

This week we will be joined by Dr Cameron Peers on our weekly Wednesday Webinar series. Cameron is a psychologist who recently completed his Doctorate in DCU. Cameron, along with last weeks guest Dr Stephen Behan carried out research on over 2,000 primary school children in the area of Physical Literacy but also looking at the psychological side of why kids do and do not take part in sport. Stephen spoke briefly on “Confidence & Motivation” last week and Cameron will go into further detail as well as other areas he has come across in his professional career and also his research.
It should be a fantastic Webinar and of value to all stakeholders in the GAA, not just coaches. Parents and Teachers might be interested to hear some of the findings of the research.

GDA Pat Spratt shows the value of school GAA initiatives.

In January, Pat Spratt started a new project in Mallow National schools for 2nd class teachers and pupils. This coaching project ran for a duration of 6 weeks in three schools Gaelscoil Aogain, St Pats boys and Scoil Ghobnatan. Mallow being a huge urban area has a lot of children who never get the opportunity to take part in our games. This was the motivation for running the programme.
The 2nd class” Maghealla peil” project saw Martin Farrissey coach in St Patricks Boys National School Martin O’ Brien in Scoil Ghobnatan National School and Pat coaching in Gaelscoil Aogain. There was five weeks of uninterrupted coaching with all 2nd class pupils and class teachers followed up our sessions twice more weekly as part of the PE Curriculum. Pupils loved the project and there was huge improvements in the players  skills and Movements over the duration of the project.
At the end of the five weeks on March 4th schools brought all 180 pupils to Mallow Gaa pitch in the town park to take part in a football Blitz day. Sixth class boys and girls refereed on the day. All schools were mixed up into teams where boys played together and girls same giving everyone an equal opportunity to play in small sided games. Mallow GAA were on site to inform children of how they could join the club for the season ahead.
The project has been very successful and allowed 180 children the opportunity to play GAA, facilitated teacher training in physical education delivery and allowed Mallow GAA to build relations with pupils and the schools which will help in the recruitment of new players.
A similar project had recently commenced in Kanturk also and will resume once GAA activity returns .

Coaching Q and A Session

To help coaches through this difficult period, the GAA, An Cumann Camogaíochta and the LGFA have created a series of coach development sessions to take place over the coming weeks. The sessions will run every Tuesday and Thursday at 7.30pm.

The sessions will be along two separate formats. Every Tuesday there will be a live Questions and Answers session with a coach. Any participants in the Q and A will have an opportunity to view the coach delivering a session from the GAA Games Development Conference over the last couple of years and submit their questions via twitter for the coach to answer live.

Every Thursday there will be a live webinar presented by a coach or coach developer. The webinar will be a 30 minute presentation followed by a live Q and A with the presenter.

The national GAA Coaching & Games Department host the first Coach Q and A session on Tuesday evening, March 31st at 7.30pm (Irish time). For the Q and A sessions, we are asking coaches to review some materials in advance.
