Mascots lead Cork hurlers out against Kilkenny

We were delighted to welcome eight mascots to SuperValu Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Saturday night along with their families. The mascots lead out the Cork Senior Hurling team onto the field ahead of the Allianz Hurling League game between Cork and Kilkenny.

In association with our main sponsors, Sports Direct, our mascots got to meet the team as they entered the players’ tunnel. Shortly after arrival, Cork captain Sean O’Dououghe came out to meet the players, sign autographs, and stand in for photos.

 

A new group of mascots will join us on Saturday night for Cork and Cavan in Allianz Football League Round 3.

John Donnelly struck the 71st-minute winner as Kilkenny condemned Cork to back-to-back Allianz League losses despite a stirring comeback in front of 16,274 fans at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

The Cats led by nine early in the first half as Cork failed to get into gear, but the hosts could’ve won it only for some wasteful shooting and bad decisions in front of goal.

Led by Conor Lehane, the sides were level five times in the final quarter before Donnelly gave Kilkenny their first League win after last week’s draw with Wexford.

Derek Lyng welcomed back Mikey Butler, Huw Lawlor, John Donnelly, debutant Luke Hogan, and Walter Walsh from their All-Ireland Club Championship exploits with O’Loughlin Gaels, Thomastown, and Tullogher-Rosbercon in a strengthened away team.

Pat Ryan, meanwhile, gave first involvements of the year to Eoin Downey and Tim O’Mahony in defence among five changes.

The opening half-hour saw Cork woefully off the pace. The home crowd grew restless as they fell nine points behind within 23 minutes.

Kilkenny were bringing all the urgency, while Ballyhale Shamrocks teammates Eoin Cody and Adrian Mullen provided the touches of class. Cody slotted a spectacular early pair from play, while Mullen was left wide open for his trio. He ended with 0-5 to his name.

Cody could’ve added a goal in the fourth minute, but Patrick Collins trapped the low shot under his body.

The Rebels totted up just two points in the first 20 minutes, a Patrick Horgan free and another from Lehane, by which time Kilkenny had 0-10 on the board.

Cork did give the crowd something to cheer late on by finishing the half with a 1-3 streak. Tommy O’Connell, O’Mahony, and a Horgan free were followed by a goal in the second minute of stoppage time.

Seán Twomey picked up the puck-out and his super reverse pass sent Conor O’Callaghan in on goal. The Dromtarriffe man is more known as a defender but he sniped a low shot to the back of the net.

The gap was just three at half-time, 0-13 to 1-7.

They almost look another bite out of the deficit on the restart. Horgan’s overhead pull bounced wide but Twomey, once again the supplier, might have been better to take on the shot himself.

Shane Kingston twice got a run on goal in the space of a minute but the first pass didn’t go to hand and the second was saved by Eoin Murphy.

They still clipped five points on the trot and when Lehane fizzed a low shot over the crossbar, the sides were level for the first time all day. The cheers from the crowd grew even louder when Mark Coleman made his return from injury after missing the entire 2023 season.

Lehane’s fourth after a searing run gave Cork their first lead, but it didn’t last long in a nip-and-tuck finish.

Walter Walsh could’ve sealed it for the Cats after Billy Drennan steered the sliotar into his path, but he didn’t make a clean connection and Collins saved.

After Donnelly put Kilkenny back ahead, Cork could’ve won it. Kingston raced clear, but twice failed to rise the sliotar, while a Horgan flick rolled across the goalmouth.

Cork and Kilkenny are set to clash at Supervalu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday, February 10th, in the Allianz Hurling League Round 2.

The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 pm, with the minor teams from Cork and Kilkenny facing off at 5:30 pm.

Tickets for the event are now on sale and can be purchased through the Cork GAA website or at selected Supervalu and Centra stores. Adult tickets are priced at €20, while admission is free for children under the age of 16.

Cork Boston GAA are seeking players this summer

As part of the One Cork Worldwide project, Cork GAA seeks to highlight the incredible work carried out by our Rebel colleagues in the promotion of Gaelic Games overseas.
Such individuals represent the red jersey with pride, maintaining a vital connection for our young people when they travel abroad.
Also, we have received tremendous support from a number of Cork supporters domiciled in Boston recently and here is our chance to give something back.
To this end, please note the attached flyer and links below which illustrate just some of the activities which Cork Boston GAA are engaged in.

Travel

Please note: Matchday parking is not available around the stadium.

We advise all supporters, where possible, to walk to the grounds as approach routes will be busy with regular commuting traffic, and routes closer to the stadium will be closed.
The area surrounding the access and egress points to the venue will be adequately lit with tower lighting.

Gardaí recommend that people walk the 15 minutes to the ground from the City Centre where possible but there will also be a free shuttle bus service which will go from Victoria Road up to the old marquee site next to Supervalu Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

The closer you park to the grounds the longer you will be held back afterwards by the Gardaí and Stewards to ensure safe traffic management flow and to prioritise the safe passage of pedestrians and cyclists.

There will be limited vehicular access to Centre Park Road, The Marina, Maryville and Monahan Road on Saturday 10th February 2024.

The inner cordon will be in place from 16.00 hrs on Sat 10/2/24 closing at the following junctions;

• Maryville at junction with Blackrock Rd (Maryville resident access only)
• Monahan Rd at junction with Link Rd (Marque Rd) (Birchgrove resident access only)
• Centre Park Rd at junction with Link Rd (Marque Rd)
• Ardfoyle at junction with Blackrock Rd
• Park Ave at junction with Blackrock Rd
The outer cordon will be in place from 17.00 hrs Sat 10/2/24 closing at the following junctions;

  • Churchyard Ln at junction with Boreenmanna Rd (resident access only)
  • Churchyard Ln at junction with Blackrock Rd (resident access only)
  • Residents of Maryville, Park Ave & Ardfoyle to access through the junctions with Blackrock Rd only.
  • Residents of Birchgrove to access through Monaghan Rd only.
  • Residents are advised to carry their driving licence, utility bill or some proof of address.
  • Residents are advised that due to the expected heavy footfall between 17.00hrs and 19.00 hrs and again between 21.00 hrs and 21.30 hrs there will be traffic disruption and to plan their day accordingly

Post-game: 8:45pm – 10pm

Pre Match – Departing Victoria Road, down Monahan Road and drop at old marquee site

Cork City Parking:

Gardai will operate a cordon near the stadium and local estates will be barriered to stop patrons from parking in front of neighbour’s houses.
Parking is available at –

  • Cork City Car Parks (Paul St, North Main St)
  • Cork City Q Parks (Carroll’s Quay, Grand parade, St Finbarr’s & City Hall)

Taxi Drop Off:
Taxis are to drop off at a designated area on the Victoria Road just before Marina Walk unless they are wheel chair taxi.
Please follow the directions of Gardaí & Stewards when dropping off a person with accessibility needs.

Public Buses:
Route 202 operates from Merchants Quay to Mahon Point and customers can board at Merchants Quay in the City Centre or at Mahon Point, to be dropped off at Ballintemple, adjacent to Supervalu Páirc Uí Chaoimh. The stadium is a 5 minute walk from this stop. Route 202 will also be available from Ballintemple, Blackrock Road after the match to City Centre and Mahon Point
Route 215 or 219 stops at the Churchyard Lane stop which is 10 minutes to the stadium.

Cycling
Cork City council have a number of bicycle parking amenities in the surrounding area with a map including all surrounding bicycle parking amenities here.
