Covid-19 Correspondence for GAA Units – Aibreán 3 2020

A Chairde,

We hope you, your families, members and friends are keeping well since we were last in touch.

Thank you for your ongoing support and attached are further guidelines addressing some of the issues that have been raised by our clubs and counties recently.

Included is advice and updates around the following:

  • Pitch maintenance (which is permitted within certain guidelines)
  • GAA Volunteer guidelines for all Volunteers (both 26 and Six Counties)
  • Emergency template for access to GAA facilities
  • Individual county by county contact numbers for Local Government Community Support (only 26 Counties set up at this point)
  • An open letter to our members
  • Latest HSE advice and information

Yesterday the Irish government launched the ‘Community Call’ initiative which aims to encourage everyone to assist those in need of help in their immediate locality.

The GAA’s ‘Club Together’ Initiative with SuperValu and Centra falls under the auspices of this government plan and much of the information provided along with this email relates back to the Government programme.

While of immediate relevance to our units operating in the 26 counties, much of it is applicable to all of our units.

The most successful and best attended GAA games development initiative each year is our Kelloggs Cúl Camps programme.

In this regard the association is committed, and planning is ongoing, to provide a Cúl Camp programme in 2020 for our young Gaelic games enthusiasts over the summer.

We are looking forward to arrival of 172,000 kits starting the end of April.

For more and regular updates stay in touch with our website.

Once again, we would like to re-iterate our gratitude to you all for helping us and the country as a whole at this challenging time.

The community spirit shown across a raft of different but equally vital initiatives and the adherence to the government guidelines has been hugely important in our collective efforts to deal with the Covid-19 outbreak.

As ever, queries can be sent to communcations@gaa.ie.

We appreciate there is a considerable amount of information attached with this email and while all of it may not be relevant to every GAA unit, club and county officers can decide what is of most use to them and their members and use accordingly.

Please stay safe and continue to play your part with social distancing, cocooning and coughing/sneezing etiquette.

Go raibh maith agaibh,

Tomás Ó Riain      Seán Ó hÓráin

All Cork GAA employees are currently working remotely.

Covid-19

    • Testing continues at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
    • Cork GAA is co-operating with Cork City and County Council community support initiatives.
    • No activities should be undertaken at any club grounds between now and April 12th, (including grass cutting), apart from emergency situations.
    • Clubs are commended for their work in supporting their local communities.

A development proposal from Bishopstown GAA was passed, subject to County Board approval.

The rúnaí updated the executive on the joint Cork GAA / SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh business plan, on which work continues to progress in association with BDO Eaton Square.

Various projects under the remit of the executive are ongoing, including child protection compliance and the enforcement of regulations for camps with regard to child protection, safety and insurance.

A subcommittee of the executive is to be set up under the chairmanship of development officer Pat Horgan to examine all aspects of independent teams ahead of the 2021 season.

An update on the SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh audit will be provided to the next executive meeting.

Planning in relation to competitions is of limited value in the present uncertain climate and will be subject to future decisions at national level. In the meantime we are grateful to all members for their compliance with both government and GAA guidelines.

The next meeting of the executive will take place on April 14th.

GDA Pat Spratt shows the value of school GAA initiatives.

In January, Pat Spratt started a new project in Mallow National schools for 2nd class teachers and pupils. This coaching project ran for a duration of 6 weeks in three schools Gaelscoil Aogain, St Pats boys and Scoil Ghobnatan. Mallow being a huge urban area has a lot of children who never get the opportunity to take part in our games. This was the motivation for running the programme.
The 2nd class” Maghealla peil” project saw Martin Farrissey coach in St Patricks Boys National School Martin O’ Brien in Scoil Ghobnatan National School and Pat coaching in Gaelscoil Aogain. There was five weeks of uninterrupted coaching with all 2nd class pupils and class teachers followed up our sessions twice more weekly as part of the PE Curriculum. Pupils loved the project and there was huge improvements in the players  skills and Movements over the duration of the project.
At the end of the five weeks on March 4th schools brought all 180 pupils to Mallow Gaa pitch in the town park to take part in a football Blitz day. Sixth class boys and girls refereed on the day. All schools were mixed up into teams where boys played together and girls same giving everyone an equal opportunity to play in small sided games. Mallow GAA were on site to inform children of how they could join the club for the season ahead.
The project has been very successful and allowed 180 children the opportunity to play GAA, facilitated teacher training in physical education delivery and allowed Mallow GAA to build relations with pupils and the schools which will help in the recruitment of new players.
A similar project had recently commenced in Kanturk also and will resume once GAA activity returns .
