Canon O’Brien Cup Game

Canon O’Brien Cup will take place this Friday January 14th at 7pm. The game will be played in the Mardyke GAA Grounds with the Cork Senior Hurlers taking on UCC Fitzgibbon Cup team.

Admission to this game is free but every year UCC GAA club take up a charitable collection. This year Carrigtwohill St.Vincent de Paul volunteers will ask for your support. This collection recognises the contribution that Margot Hartnett gave to her community in Carrigtwohill and her close connection with UCC Sport.

Speaking ahead of the game on Friday, John Grainger, UCC GAA Club said, “Our Fitzgibbon Senior Hurlers take on the Cork Senior Hurlers to once again honour Canon Michael O’Brien for a cup in his name. Michael O’Brien is a name steeped in the history and folklore of UCC GAA. Along with Dan Beechinor and Prof Willie J Smith, he led the college to 10 Fitzgibbon wins in 11 years including the famous 8 in a row. O’Brien shaped the identity of a whole group of students at that time, something that is still being carried on today. Indeed that is what his legacy will say.”

Rebels overcame treacherous conditions to record McGrath Cup victory

Cork 2-9 Clare 0-10

BRIAN Hurley ensured Keith Ricken made a winning start as the new Cork manager with a decisive win over Clare in the McGrath Cup at a weather-battered Hennessy Memorial Park in Milltown Malbay on Saturday.

The Castlehaven forward defied horrendous conditions of a near gale-force wind and intermittent showers to top score with 1-6.

Clare played with the howling wind at their backs from the start, but still trailed by two points at the interval as Cork swept to a winning position, leading by 2-9 to 0-7 entering the closing quarter.

Success for Ballygiblin

Ballygiblin 2-14 Skeheenarinky (Tipperary) 1-9

In the battle of the near-neighbours Cork’s Ballygiblin came out on top in the Munster Junior hurling championship final at Mallow.

Sheer joy for the Cork side as their fans spilled onto the pitch afterwards to celebrate with their heroes.

A stream and a few miles separate their home pitches and though they are from different counties they would know each other well.

Most of them would have gone to school together in Mitchelstown and have won titles together there. But all that was forgotten as club loyalties took precedence in a game that was worthy of the occasion.

The demand for tickets was high and it was sold out well in advance of the day and such was the demand that crowd congestion meant the throw-in had to be delayed 15 minutes.

Scorers for Ballygiblin: S O’Sullivan 2-2, J O’Sullivan 0-9 (7f, 0-1 65), D Barry, M Walsh, K Duggan 0-1 each.

Skeheenarinky: A English 1-0, T Vaughan 0-6 (6f), C Sweeney, D Brennan, N Vaughan 0-1 each.
