Munster Senior Inter-County Fixtures

The Munster CCC tonight have confirmed the dates, times and venues for the 2021 Munster Senior Hurling and Football Championships.

The Munster Senior Hurling Championship will get underway on Sunday June 27^th with Waterford taking on Clare at 3:15pm in Semple Stadium Thurles. The winners will play Tipperary a week later on Sunday July 4^th while the previous evening (July 3^rd), defending Munster and All-Ireland Champions Limerick will play Cork at 7pm in Semple Stadium Thurles.

The Munster Senior Football Championship Quarter-Finals will take place on Saturday June 26^th with Limerick hosting Waterford at 3pm while Clare travel to Killarney to play Kerry at 7pm. The Munster Senior Football Semi-Finals will take place on Saturday July 10^th with Cork meeting the winners of Limerick and Waterford at 3pm while the defending Munster Football champions Tipperary await the winners of Kerry and Clare at 7pm.

Covid Update for Counties and Clubs

Please note the important information below based on queries we have received in the past week:

Information for Clubs

Adult and Underage Training: From Monday, May 10th, both adult and underage training are permitted on a full contact basis in pods of 15 for all Gaelic Games teams in the 26 Counties. Games (including challenge games) will not be permitted until June 7th .

In the 6 Counties, full contact training for panels is permitted without any reference to pods; games are also currently permitted.

GAA Injury Benefit Fund cover remains in place until May 31st, 2021 based on 2020 team registrations as previously communicated. Details on the 2021 GAA Injury Benefit Fund cover/registration will issue in due course.

Indoor use of facilities: We wish to remind all clubs that use of indoor facilities for GAA activity is not permitted.

Gym facilities must remain closed (exception: A player on an inter county panel may use their relevant Club Gym for individual training as long as they are following the advice in the Inter County Return to Training and Play document)

The only instances where indoor facilities for non-GAA activities can be used are where:

agreement was in place prior to March 2020.
relevant insurance is in place and
The activity is one permitted at a given point in time under the Government’s “Resilience and Recovery – the Path Ahead” or in line with Executive protocols in the North.

Use by State bodies (e.g., HSE/Dept of Health/Dept of Education) is also permitted.

In the 6 Counties, Social Clubs/Bars serving both alcohol and food are permitted to open (serving outdoors only) in line with Executive protocols and subject to compliance with the relevant licensing laws.

Membership: Please note that May 31st, 2021 is the date by which members must be registered and paid by in order to have voting rights at the next club AGM. All playing members must be registered in advance of returning to play/train on Foireann in order for Injury Fund cover to be in place.

Officer Training: All Officer Training should continue to be delivered online. Outdoor coaching education courses may be held but are subject to a 15-person maximum.

Information for Counties:

Use of Buses for travel: The capacity limits for bus travel have increased from 25% of capacity to 50% of capacity from yesterday, Monday May 10th.

Training Camps: A reminder to all Counties that Training Camps involving overnight stays are not permitted in 2021.

Minor/U20 Challenge Games: Challenge matches at Minor and U20 inter county level cannot take place until June 10th under Government regulations.

Training for Talent Academy Squads: Training for Talent Academy squads can take place from June 5th – a full policy in this regard, including relevant dates for games, will be circulated in the coming days.

Registration of Senior Inter County Panels: A reminder that all Senior Inter County Panel members must be registered with the C.C.C.C by this evening in order to ensure players who are not in the match day 26 can be guaranteed entry to grounds for upcoming games. This must be completed by today (Tuesday, 11th May) and returned to bernard.smith@gaa.ie on the registration form previously circulated. Changes to the panel names can be made during the course of the season if required

Update on Championship programme and league groups

Attached is the current draft master fixture plan for 2021, incorporating dates for the following:

Inter-county League and Championship dates
Unfinished 2020 Club Championships at all grades from Premier Senior to Junior C
2021 Club League Cups sponsored by Cork Credit Unions and RedFM
2021 Club Championships sponsored by Bon Secours and Co-Op Superstores.

Also attached are the League Cup Groupings in both football and hurling.

Please note the following:

The All Ireland U20 hurling final for 2020 has been confirmed since last week’s meeting for the second weekend in July, thus requiring the further deferral of the LIHC final between Castlemartyr and Russell Rovers.

Inter-county Minor and U20 dates will be finalised following this week’s Munster Council CCC meeting. These games are expected to take place in mid-July

League Cup competitions will replace the Club Leagues for 2021, with football and hurling played on alternate weekends from June 7th and June 13th, respectively. League Cup competition grades will be based mainly on two groups of four. with the top two in each group qualifying for the semi-final stage. Some modification is required at the bottom grade in each code in order to facilitate the existing number of teams. These competitions will have no impact on league grading for 2022, which will instead revert to 2020 positions. Groups for the league cups were based on previous league positions, with modifications added to avoid clubs meeting in both league and championship.

The Divisions / Colleges section of the PSFC and PSHC will be completed along last year’s lines. CIT, UCC and Imokilly (hurling) / CIT, UCC and Duhallow (football) receiving byes to the semi-finals of the Divisions / Colleges rounds of the County PSHC & PSFC Competitions. The remaining Divisional teams will play-off in two groups of three (depending on entries), with games taking place on Wednesday, July 14th and Wednesday, July 21st. All Divisional teams that have entered the Round Robin stage agreed previously to line out without County players if necessary. All divisions / colleges are hereby requested to confirm entries by next Monday, May 17th.

There are no plans to complete the County stages of any Club U21 competitions for either 2020 or 2021 currently.

County Junior Championship deadlines have yet to be confirmed, but the County stages of the Junior A County Championship are likely to start on the weekend of October 23rd / 24th.

2021 Open County Junior B & C competitions will commence on the weekend of July 30th-Aug 2nd.

The Tom Creedon Cup will be organised by Macroom GAA Club. It is planned to organise this competition on hurling weekends, with Sunday, August 8th confirmed as the latest possible date for the final.

If Clubs or Divisions / Colleges have any observations on the above, please revert in writing by next Monday, May 17th.

Cork beat Waterford in Hurling League

Cork got off to a winning start against Waterford in Sunday’s Allianz HL Division 1 Group A clash at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh, but needed a trio of late goals to be sure of the points.

The Rebels never trailed against a side that beat them in the League and Championship last year, but what had been an 11-point lead at one stage was reduced to four as Waterford fought back late in the second half.

However, Cork’s bench had a decisive impact as a goal from sub Shane Kingston was followed by two more from another man brought on, debutant Alan Connolly. Though Waterford had a late flurry with an unanswered 1-3, the goal coming from Stephen Bennett, Cork still retained a seven-point cushion by the end.

The opening stages of the first half were close but Cork established some daylight to lead by 0-6 to 0-4 by the water-break, Jack O’Connor going closest to an early goal for them. When action started again, they did find the net with a flowing move that saw Shane Barrett and Darragh Fitzgibbon link to set up Robbie O’Flynn for a well-taken finish.

Frees from captain Patrick Horgan and a Séamus Harnedy point helped them to 1-12 to 0-8 half-time lead, with Stephen Bennett the Waterford scorer-in-chief.

Cork moved eight ahead thanks to Horgan early in the second half and, after Bennett responded, Horgan almost had another Cork goal but Waterford full-back Conor Prunty pulled off a superb block.

Even so, Horgan (free) and Luke Meade were on hand to put Cork nine ahead, 1-15 to 0-9. After Waterford’s Kieran Bennett got his second point, the Rebels struck for a second goal, with Jack O’Connor finding the net after Waterford were turned over coming out of defence.

The lead was 2-15 to 0-10, but Waterford came back again, with Austin Gleeson impressive for them while Bennett continued to be deadly accurate from dead balls. It was 2-18 to 0-18 by the time of the second-half water-break, with Cork pushing ahead again as Horgan and O’Flynn had points.

Still Waterford wouldn’t relent and Waterford ate into the deficit, point by point. With the margin down to four points, Cork might have been nervous but it didn’t show and they made sure they did enough to secure the victory as Kingston’s goal gave them breathing space before Connolly was on hand to net his brace.

They travel to face Tipperary next Saturday, while Waterford are up against Westmeath.
