Munster Success for Russell Rovers

Munster success for Russell Rovers in today’s Junior Final.

In very wet conditions in Dungarvan today, Russell Rovers beat St.Mary’s from Waterford on a scoreline of 2-13 to 0-11.

 

Russell Rovers will play St. Mary’s (Waterford) in the AIB Munster Club Junior Hurling Championship Final on Sunday December 8th at 12 noon in Fraher Field Dungarvan (note fixture change).

New Cork GAA website goes live

Cork GAA have launched our new website. After weeks of meeting, planning and designing, the new, mobile responsive website is now live.

Cork GAA IT committee have developed the new website as part of a number of steps in the digital transformation for the County.

One of the major features of the new site is its mobile responsive across all platforms from mobile phones to tablets to laptops. The site will have live feeds from our social media pages and a new clubs home page with all the latest fixtures and results across all sections of Cork GAA feeding in.

The new website will be updated with further information in the coming days and weeks as competition programmes are announced.

GAA Liability Insurance

GAA Liability Insurance extends to cover clubs as organiser of Poc Fada competitions.  However, in the event a personal injury claim arises Insurers will not confirm indemnity to the club until the club can demonstrate that the club upheld it’s legal duty of care and took all reasonable precautions to run a safe event.

As an alleged injured party has up to 2 years to initiate a personal injury claim the only chance we have of effectively investigating allegations of negligence and defending claims is if clubs maintain written records of the management of the club property and activities.

As a minimum we recommend clubs record activities at the monthly executive meeting and document in the minutes no incidents were reported or an incident occurred and was reported to Croke Park.

If an incident were to occur you need to record with as much detail as possible (identify witnesses and take photos) and submit notification to me.

Clubs can record event planning in their own format or I’ve drafted the attached as aguide.  The supplementary templates include an accident report form and cleaning checklist.

Over 60% of personal injury claims arise following alleged slip/trips and falls so a key control is to document the property was checked before, during and after events as this is the most effective means of preventing incidents occurring and/or challenging claims should they arise.

Ireland Lights up

Before the year ends, we would like to highlight the popular ‘Ireland Lights Up’ walking initiative returns in January 2020 in partnership with the GAA, Operation Transformation, and Get Ireland Walking.

In a bid to walk off the turkey and make exercise more accessible on the darker nights, clubs across the 32 counties are once more encouraged to turn on their floodlights and host community walking groups during the broadcast period of the hit RTÉ show.

Over 270 clubs participated in Ireland Lights Up in 2019, with a total of 65,000 walkers getting out during the initiative.

The first date for clubs to host ‘Ireland Lights Up’ 2020 is Thursday, January 9th, but this year clubs are free to host their walking groups any, and as many, nights of the week as they want

Cathail O’Mahony of Cork wins the Munster Under 20 Footballer of the Year, 

Cathail was a Cork Minor Footballer in 2016 and 2017 before going on to be joint captain when Mitchelstown CBS that won the Munster Senior B Hurling Championship.


In 2019 Cathail played a huge role for Cork in their march to Munster and All-Ireland Under 20 Football glory. His display of point scoring from play and frees was of the highest quality and his tally of 2 goals and 20 points over the campaign showed him as a player with wonderful talent.

It culminated in him being named Man of the Match in the All-Ireland Final victory over Dublin and later being named at full-forward on the EirGrid Under 20 Football team of the year.

Ladies Footballer of the Year – Melissa Duggan (Cork)

2019 has certainly proven to be a standout year in the Senior Inter-County career of Cork’s Melissa Duggan. A member of the Dohenys club in Dunmanway, Melissa won a first National Ladies Football League title in May of this year when Cork defeated Galway in the Division One decider. As a result of numerous eye-catching performances over the course of the league, Melissa was named at left corner back on the Division One Team of the League.

In June, Melissa claimed a second Munster Senior Ladies Football Championship medal following Cork’s victory over Waterford. Cork bowed out of the All-Ireland Senior Championship at the semi-final stage to the eventual champions Dublin. However, Melissa’s individual excellence throughout the Championship saw her receive a first All-Star award recently. Club success was also to follow this year as Melissa helped Dohenys to win a much coveted County Junior title in October. To complete a remarkable year, Melissa captained Munster last weekend to a second Ladies Football Interprovincial title in a row, a feat last achieved in 2004.
