Cork GAA County Committee Report 03/03/2020

The County Committee met on 03/03/2020. The minutes of the previous meeting on 04/02/2020 were taken as read and adopted. The Youghal delegate, who had missed the previous meeting, expressed disappointment that the County Board pass was being replaced, while the St. Nick’s delegate felt that All-Ireland medal holders should be excluded from the change, but the Cathaoirleach reiterated that the proposal had been accepted unanimously at the previous meeting, that it was a very small gesture by which we could all do our bit to improve the finances of Cork GAA, given that there were over 900 free passes in circulation, and that it was vital that all pass-holders were treated equally by being offered the opportunity to purchase the new Season Ticket at a much-discounted rate of €50 instead of the pass.

The Cathaoirleach then advised the meeting that talks had begun involving Cork GAA, Cairde Chorcaí, members of the stadium board and members of the financial advisory and planning sub-committee with a view to developing a co-ordinated plan for the financing of all aspects of Cork GAA, including the stadium, and that an update would be provided to the County Board in due course.

She also announced that financial advisers BDO Eaton Square had been engaged to develop a joint business plan Cork GAA and Páirc uí Chaoimh, which was due for completion by early summer. As the secondment of Michelle McAleer to the stadium was due to end after the completion of the stadium accounts, Cork GAA and the stadium board were to jointly fund three short-term appointments in the commercial, facilities and accounting areas, to operate across both entities pending the finalisation of the business plan.

Tributes were paid to Michelle McAleer by the Chairperson and by Michael Byrne, the stadium event controller.

Inter-county match reports were read out, and the Chairperson wished Keith Ricken and the U20 footballers every success in the following night’s Munster Final against Kerry.

The Progress report was adopted, and the Runaí raised the issue of child protection in the context of un-approved camps. He stressed the importance of adhering to the rules of the GAA and the law of the land in relation to such camps, and reminded clubs of the standards required for approval.

A brief CCC report was given, and clubs were informed that league games which had been postponed due to weather could be re-fixed outside of the 30-day period but that all fixtures needed to be submitted to the office by Friday 13th March.

Reporting on the recent annual Congress, the Chairperson commiserated with Jerry O’Sullivan, who had been unsuccessful in his bid for the GAA presidency, and congratulated Larry McCarthy, originally from Bishopstown, on his election as Uachtarán Tofa.

A number of club developments were proposed and seconded, and votes of sympathy were passed.

The next meeting was fixed for April 7th.

Cork beat Derry in League

Cork 3-13 Derry 3-11

Cork survived a late scare as Derry battled from 10 points down with only eight minutes of regulation time remaining to lose by just two at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

The result leaves Cork on the verge of promotion back to Division Two, requiring just one more point from their remaining two games to be sure.

They led by 1-5 to 0-4 at half-time after playing with the howling wind. Damien Gore scored their goal in the 19th minute following a mistake from a short kickout.

Cork added a second goal after 45 minutes, when Paul Kerrigan set up John O’Rourke, who added a third following a strong Sean Powter run on the hour.

Just before, Derry’s Niall Loughlin grabbed their first goal, but with 62 minutes gone, Cork had raced 3-12 to 1-8 in front and were coasting.

But Derry kept battling right to the end as goals from Emmett Bradley and substitute Patrick Kearney left Cork sweating on the final whistle.

Cork hurlers lose to Galway

Allianz Hurling League Division One Group A

GALWAY 2-18 CORK 1-16

By Cian O’Connell at Pearse Stadium

Ultimately it turned into a satisfying win that was much more about character than class for Galway.

Shane O’Neill’s outfit fell behind in the 50th minute and with Cork backed by the elements in the second period the locals were under duress.

That, though, was when Galway started to answer the questions being posed by Cork with Gearoid McInerney and Shane Cooney two defiant figures for the maroon and white county.

Robbie O’Flynn’s 52nd minute dismissal for a foul on Fintan Burke scarcely aided Cork’s cause and Galway exploited the numerical superiority with the issue delicately poised.

In the closing stages Galway outscored Cork by 1-5 to 0-2 with Brian Concannon’s delightful 55th minute goal proving to be the critical moment.

Despite playing into the teeth of a strong first half wind, Cork were content to only depart trailing by 1-10 to 0-10 at the interval.

That was chiefly due to the efficiency of Kieran Kingston’s charges, who registered 0-10 from 10 attempts.

Galway had plenty of opportunities initially, but the fact that only 1-10 was struck from 20 shots ensured Cork were in a decent position at the turnaround considering the elements.

With Patrick Horgan sharp from frees the teams were deadlocked at 0-4 each by the 17th minute before Galway enjoyed a productive burst.

Aidan Harte, Conor Cooney (free), and Adrian Tuohey nailed points prior to Jason Flynn’s sweet 23rd minute major.

Cathal Mannion, Cooney, and Brian Concannon were all involved in the build up with Flynn eventually rattling the Cork net.

Cork, though, stayed composed reeling off six of the last nine points before the break with Conor Lehane and Bill Cooper landing splendid efforts.

When the action recommenced Cork continued to narrow the deficit and hit the front in the 50th minute as O’Mahony netted.

O’Flynn’s red card followed shortly after and Galway subsequently pounced for a goal with Conor Cooney’s inviting delivery gathered by Concannon, who mined a goal.

From then until the finish Cork could only muster a couple of Horgan frees, while Galway finished smartly.

Substitute Evan Niland rifled over two frees and the returning David Burke sealed the deal with a trademark injury time point which was saluted by a throaty western roar. Galway gleaned the spoils.

Scorers for Galway: Brian Concannon 1-2, Cathal Mannion 0-5 (4fs), Jason Flynn 1-1, Conor Cooney 0-3 (2fs), Niall Burke and Evan Niland (2fs) 0-2 each, Aidan Harte, Adrian Tuohey, and Aidan Harte 0-1 each.
